Hell's Forest Icon.png Hell's Forest (or, alternatively, Section 3) is the third Section of Deltatraveler, taking place in the world of GG!Underfell.

It originally released on December 23rd, 2023, coinciding with its showcase in UNDEREVENT 2023. Compared to the previous sections, it had more of a mixed reception from the community, though overall it was still seen as positive.

Story

Normal Route

After beating Porky and heading through the grey door in Lilliput Steps, Kris, Susie, and Noelle end up back in Snowdin, but the party notes it seems slightly different. They press on and encounter Papyrus (GG!Underfell) and Sans (GG!Underfell), the latter of which tries to kill Kris. After some talking, they both walk away. Susie at first thinks that the violent Sans was the one that they met earlier who sold items to the party, but Noelle calms her down commenting on how the Sans that they met earlier did not look the same as the one that tried to kill Kris, with a crack under his eye and different-colored clothes. Eventually, they find Sans (Undertale), confirming this theory. The party encounters Papyrus (GG!Underfell) and Sans (GG!Underfell) again on two separate occasions. After a close call with a fake letter that turns out to be a trap, Papyrus says he will keep a close eye on Sans.

The trio eventually reach a dead end and are forced to traverse the Forest of Wild Beasts. Shortly upon entering, the trio get their hands on a ladder piece, which Susie keeps. In the forest, they find a heavily-guarded cabin. Kris knocks on the door, and a voice responds thinking they are Sans (GG!Underfell), ordering them to leave. Susie is annoyed by this seemingly random outburst, but Noelle recognizes the voice as the voice of Q.C (a character who also exists in Deltarune). Q.C hesitates, but then decides that the trio aren't a threat and lets them in, explaining to them that she and her sisters were forced to camp in the deep forest after Sans (GG!Underfell) started going on a murderous rampage in Snowdin Town. While Q.C often returns to her shop to gather supplies, she has recently been unable to since the exit ladder is broken. Susie says that she has one of the ladder pieces, much to Q.C's delight and asks the party to find the rest of the pieces for her. The trio accepts, and Q.C lets them rest, with Susie and Noelle having to share a bed, much to the latter's excitement.

Kris has an uncomfortable rest, and after waking up, requests to talk to Susie and Noelle about the SOUL and how it is controlling them. They agree, so Kris goes back into their room, rips out their SOUL and hides it under their pillow. As they leave the room, Kris reveals their eyes under their hair. While Kris (offscreen) explains to Susie and Noelle about the situation, Gaster starts speaking to the player directly, urging them to create a vessel to control instead of Kris. The player chooses the appearance of the vessel, but before they can continue the vessel creation, the trio returns upstairs. Gaster assures the player that they will meet again, and the vessel is placed into the world and hides under Kris's bed. Outside the room, Susie and Noelle reassure Kris about their situation and they'll try to control it. Kris thanks the two and goes inside their room alone, reinserting the SOUL. Shortly after, the vessel leaves the cabin by jumping through a window, having somehow teleported to the other bedroom.

The trio leaves the house and press on with their search for the missing ladder pieces. After finding all four, Sans (GG!Underfell) chases the party down, but are saved by Q.C. They repair the ladder and Q.C leaves to get her supplies, while the trio continues on. They encounter Papyrus (GG!Underfell) again, informing him that Sans escaped. Papyrus spots Sans ahead, so he assures the trio that they are safe from him for now. After multiple puzzles, the trio eventually reach the bridge to Snowdin Town, where Q.C tries to talk sense into Papyrus and Sans. After Q.C shoves past the skeletons to get her supplies, Papyrus introduces the party to the "Gauntlet of Deadly Terror", an extremely dangerous challenge with several deadly weapons. Noelle attempts to convince Papyrus that said gauntlet is neither fair nor a puzzle, which works, and Papyrus attempts to switch it off. However, nothing happens, because Sans has stolen the controls. Sans criticizes Papyrus's ineffective killing methods and kicks him off the cliff, though he grabs the edge and survives. Sans then lunges at Kris's SOUL again, prompting Kris to throw Sans off the edge of the bridge to stop him. However, this accidentally causes Noelle to fall off as well, so Kris and Susie jump after her.

When the trio reach the ground, a large mound of snow breaks their fall. After exploring briefly, the trio find the grey door they needed. However, right as they are about to jump through, Sans (GG!Underfell) ambushes them once again and attempts to grab Kris's SOUL, with Susie defending them. After pushing her and Noelle to the ground, Sans moves to taunting Susie, hinting at how he killed her as an orphan child in this world, and saying he'll do it again. Kris then stabs Sans in the back with their knife. Sans shakes them off and they begin battling, eventually leaving Sans on his last legs. If he is spared by casting Sleep Mist, Papyrus shows up and talks to the sleeping Sans about his barbaric ways, and says that he will give up his goal of becoming a Royal Guard and will instead try to help others; if Sans was spared normally, Sans eventually reveals that though he attacked Susie's counterpart he never killed her and explains how he became obsessed with bringing this world to an end. During his speech he realizes how badly he hurt Papyrus and is filled with regret. After this, Papyrus convinces Sans to join him in attempting to become a better person. Either way, Papyrus apologizes to the party for everything they've endured and leave. If Sans is killed however, Papyrus does not show up. Sans can either be killed normally resulting in him taunting Susie, who furiously slashes at him repeatedly to death, or killing him with Noelle's Ice Shock spell, leading to a much more ominous death where Sans freezes over. Regardless of how the battle ends, the party leaves the world behind them by entering the grey door.

The trio end up in the inn of Snowdin Town, meeting the Undertale counterparts of Dess and Noelle (the latter of whom is known as Noel). After some talking with the two, including a moment where the two Noelles meet, Dess and Noel leave Snowdin Town. Susie is concerned upon hearing that the Royal Guard is beginning to hunt for humans, but nonetheless the trio can relax in Snowdin Town for a while before proceeding to Waterfall, where they have to hide in some kelp from Undyne. Undyne calls Undertale's Papyrus to inform him about a human being spotted leaving Snowdin along with two allied monsters. After she finishes the call, Susie accidentally blows the trio's cover and Undyne chases them through Waterfall. They eventually manage to escape her in a room with a telescope and another grey door. With the party not wanting to use the grey door, Noelle finds another possible way forward, but the trio are cut off by Undyne who corners them next to the grey door. She orders Kris to give her their SOUL, or she'll rip it out herself. However, to everyone's surprise, Kris obliges and rips out their SOUL. They ask Undyne if she'd follow them into a world that may not have a way back to the Underground, in which she admits she wouldn't if she can't bring the SOUL back with her. Knowing this, Kris impulsively jumps through the grey door without Susie or Noelle and into the world of The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past.

Obliteration Route

After killing Ness and Paula and heading through the grey door in Lilliput Steps, Kris, Susie and Noelle find themselves back in a more unnerving version of Snowdin. Noelle remains silent, still shook from the events that transpired earlier, with Susie responding that she isn't feeling the best either, just wanting to get to Hotland at this point. The encounter with Sans and Papyrus is about the same as in the Normal Route, but after the player kills Snowdrake, Noelle snaps and leaves the party. Susie then leaves as well to ensure Noelle doesn't get killed. Kris has to go through all the same obstacles as normal, while still killing all enemies, but without the help of Susie or Noelle.

When Kris goes to the Forest of Wild Beasts, Susie informs them that they found Q.C's house and that they should head over there with her. After fighting the Feraldrake and obtaining the first ladder piece, the two reach Q.C's house. Q.C then explains her situation like she does in the Normal Route. Q.C allows the two to sleep upstairs, so Susie shares a bed with Noelle while Kris gets their own room, but not before Susie reminds Kris that they will have a talk about the whole situation. After an uncomfortable rest, Susie and Noelle start talking to Kris about their lack of control. During the tense conversation, Kris collapses and begins to cry, and Susie joins in, panicking that they killed a lot of people. Kris requests to discuss things further downstairs and leaves the SOUL behind like in the Normal Route. The vessel creation sequence with Gaster goes along the same until Kris, Susie, and Noelle reappear talking about their plan to give whoever is controlling Kris back some of the pain even if it means they don't make it home as Kris doesn't want to go home in their current state. Kris then reinserts the SOUL.

When leaving the forest, the player has to intentionally trigger the fight with Dogamy and Dogaressa in order to stay on the route. Susie and Noelle will not join the battle (as discussed offscreen), but are terrified by Kris's fighting ability after killing them and question if more is at play besides getting stronger. Later the player also has to trigger the fight with Lesser Dog even after Susie attempts to stop them. Noelle will stay behind. After killing Lesser Dog, Susie will attempt to fight Kris, but doesn't know how. However, she is inadvertently attacking simply by thinking about attacking Kris who informs her after her turn. With this realization Susie decides it's time to stop fighting. At this point Kris can attack which will cause Susie to be knocked down, but she won't die and will spare herself, or they can just spare Susie. If Susie is attacked, choosing aggressive dialogue will cause Susie to develop the Devious status, causing her to often resist commands in battle. Giving Susie the Devious status is not necessary for the route.

After this, everything continues like on the Normal Route until the Sans fight, which is more difficult in this route. After Sans becomes tired, killing him in any way will result in the same outcome as the Normal Route, only with slightly altered dialogue in some specific cases. If Susie is Devious and Ice Shock is used to kill Sans however, she'll throw away her Heavy Branch icon.png Heavy Branch and refuse to equip any weapon, realizing that the SOUL clearly doesn't want or need her after intentionally trying to kill her and getting Noelle to freeze Sans. Sparing Sans normally isn't possible in this route, but sparing him with Sleep Mist will surprise him, because he knows that even if they committed a huge massacre, he was the one person the party would be justified in killing. He then walks off to sleep somewhere else, leaving the trio alone. Susie is furious at the player for sparing Sans of all people, saying that even she would have killed him despite everything that they've done so far. She grabs Kris and shouts angrily, but Noelle tells her to stop, pointing out that at least the trio won't be able to draw blood anymore. Susie calms down a bit and prepares to leave through the grey door, but not before ensuring that the SOUL knows that she hates them.

The Snowdin intermission is mostly the same although you have to kill the Rough Mole in Waterfall, UNOTRAVELER is not playable and some of the NPCs' dialogue is more somber. Just like in the Normal Route, Undyne prevents the party from leaving and Kris jumps in the grey door alone.

Trivia

  • A demo for Section 3 was available due to a fundraiser goal for one of Deltatraveler's developers being reached. This demo went up to the Forest of Wild Beasts, ending when the first Feraldrake attacked.
    • This makes Section 3 the first section to have an official public demo.
    • A near-identical demo was available much earlier to popular Undertale content creator Shayy, who streamed their playthrough of said demo.
  • Following Kris revealing their eye, the title screen art of the Delta Warriors will change accordingly to reflect this.
  • There are several references to memes within the Pacifist Route and the end-section intermission:
    • In Desolate Snowdin, if you backtrack to the Spaghetti room after all Chilldrakes, Feraldrakes and Snowdrake were spared, an interaction will occur between one of the drakes and Noelle, referencing the "how hungry?" meme. A unique dialogue portrait of a realistic deer is used in this interaction only.
    • Also in Desolate Snowdin, after sparing all enemies and then backtracking to the room with the broken fishing rod, the smurf cat meme appears on the other side of the river.
      • Using glitches or Test Mode to interact with the smurf cat results in narration saying "We Live We Love We lie".
    • Another meme reference in Underfell is when Greater Dog mentions "Protocol 727", referencing a common meme among osu! players, "727" aka "When You See It".
    • In Snowdin Town, Goku is present on the boat that Noel and Dess depart on. There is a 10% chance of his outfit appearing as "drip" rather than its usual.[1]
    • In Waterfall, Noelle has a unique dialogue sprite as she looks into the telescope, referencing the "no bitches?" meme.
  • While in the Bunny House in the Forest of Wild Beasts, interacting with the fridge will make Susie refer to the good Sans as "Blue Sans". Interacting with it again makes her say if they found a Sans who makes really dumb jokes, they could call him "Green Sans". Noelle asks why, to which Susie says she just feels like he'd be green. This is likely a reference to a Green Sans fangame, as well as many other Green Sans memes made by the Undertale community.
  • During the ice XO puzzle, falling off the edge can sometimes result in a humorous encounter with VyletBunni.
  • Frostermit, an enemy from Undertale Yellow, appears as a cameo NPC in the snow pile room after the Gauntlet of Deadly Terror, as well as in the Snowdin intermission.
  • Inverted Fate Papyrus's appearance is likely a reference to the fact that several fans on the Tumblr ask blog for Deltatraveler have requested an Inverted Fate section of the game which Sarah is not able to include.
