Papyrus (GG!Underfell)

From DELTATRAVELER Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Papyrus (GG!Underfell is the secondary antagonist of Section 3 - Hell's Forest, acting as alternate version of Papyrus from Undertale. He originates from VyletBunni's (creator of Deltatraveler) Underfell's YouTube series known as GG!Underfell.

Profile

Appearance

Papyrus looks similar to his Undertale counterpart, but with some small differences. He is a tall skeleton often seen with a large smile, and has eyes which resemble vertical slits. A crack can be seen above his right eye, which may have been formed when his older brother bashed his head in. Like his Undertale counterpart, he wears an orange cape and red gloves and boots, though his cape is noticeably larger and has many rips and tears when viewed from behind. He wears a black chestplate with a gold trim. His chestplate has spikes on the shoulders, unlike his Undertale counterpart. He wears red briefs with a golden belt.

If Sans (GG!Underfell) is spared, Papyrus removes his chestplate and takes his cape, using it as a scarf which he wears around his neck.

Personality

Papyrus is somewhat similar to his brother as he wants to capture and kill a human, though he is only doing so to become a member of the Royal Guard. He doesn't go out of his way to kill other monsters, and insists on catching his victims by using traps and puzzles. He is also slightly picky about how his traps and puzzles work, such as when he realizes that his Gauntlet of Deadly Terror isn't a fair trap. He also expects the trio to be fair too, like when Susie suggests a method to cheat the electric maze puzzle, Papyrus warns the trio that if they don't comply with his rules, then he will allow his brother to do as he pleases.

Papyrus seems to care about his brother, but doesn't like his brother's methods of killing. He gets angry at Sans multiple times when he tries to kill Kris at the start of the section, and he berates him for being barbaric and killing everything he sees. He also dislikes being called 'boss' by Sans. While he attempts to keep his brother in check, he sometimes fails, like when Sans escapes to the Forest of Wild Beasts to attack the trio.

He's shown to be somewhat dim-witted, like when he believed that Sans was with him as he was working on his puzzles when in reality Sans was attacking the trio in the Forest of Wild Beasts. He's also susceptible to being tricked by his brother, such as if Kris decides not to open Sans's letter bomb, Sans convinces Papyrus to open it instead, nearly getting him killed in the process.

At the end of the section, if Sans (GG!Underfell) is spared in any way, Papyrus shows a much more considerate side, much like his original Undertale counterpart. He admits to his brother that he misses when he made jokes and valued his friends. Because of this, it is likely that Papyrus's motives to kill a human and use deadly traps were only caused because he was being influenced by his brother. Realizing this as well as the fact that a position at the Royal Guard is written in blood, he changes his ways and decides to start helping people. If Sans was spared normally, Papyrus convinces him to join him on his path of atonement, showing he also has some charisma.

Story

Normal Route

Papyrus first appears at the start of the section, working at his sentry station when he notices the Delta Warriors approaching. He notes how he doesn't recognize Kris or Susie, which he thinks is strange. Susie asks who he is, and he introduces himself. Susie awkwardly tells him to keep working as they make their way to Hotland. Papyrus initially accepts this, but then realizes that Kris looks familiar. As he goes to check his records, Sans (GG!Underfell) lunges at Kris's SOUL, though Papyrus pulls the two apart and angrily asks him what he's doing, then criticizes him for being unrefined and barbaric. Papyrus explains that he needs to kill Kris to be a part of the Royal Guard, and he will do so by using traps, since it is a manner of culture. Sans starts moving towards Kris again, causing Papyrus to shout at him again, telling him to come with him, and then tells the trio to come forth if they dare.

Papyrus appears shortly after a few more rooms, arguing with Sans. Noticing the trio, he attempts to start talking about his invisible electricity maze, though Sans (GG!Underfell) keeps triggering it, electrocuting Papyrus. This amuses Susie and Noelle. After being told by Sans to give Kris the orb, he makes his way through the maze to do so. Midway through, he takes off his boots after being informed by his brother that he is leaving a trail behind him. Papyrus warns the trio that if they do not comply with his rules, he will allow Sans to do as he pleases. After Kris completes the maze, Papyrus congratulates them, then warns them about the next puzzle being designed by his brother. He then leaves with Sans.

After some more rooms, Papyrus warns the trio about his brother's trap, hoping that they are ready. If the player makes Kris open Sans's letter bomb, Papyrus is disappointed in Sans, thinking his trap could have been something like a flattering letter, which then could have left Kris vulnerable. If Kris walks past the letter, Papyrus becomes annoyed at Sans since his trap didn't do anything. Sans convinces Papyrus to open the letter himself. He notices the letter is filled with bones and jumps out of the way in time, concerning him. Regardless, Sans simply tells him that he's not going to let the trio by after what they've done to him. Papyrus asks what he's talking about, but Sans just leaves without giving a proper answer, leaving Papyrus confused. He assures the trio that he will keep Sans on a figurative leash from now on, and that they will only encounter fair challenges.

In the next room, Papyrus has left a barricade to prevent the trio from taking the usual path through Snowdin since it is too dangerous. The barricade tells the trio to go through the Forest of Wild Beasts instead. At some point offscreen, Sans (GG!Underfell) escapes Papyrus without him knowing.

Papyrus doesn't appear for a while after until after the first XOXO puzzle, where he greets the party again. Susie accuses him of not keeping an eye on Sans (GG!Underfell), which causes him to realize that Sans escaped. He then sees Sans waiting for him ahead, so he knows that the trio is safe for now. Papyrus tells the trio that the next XOXO puzzle is in the shape of Sans's face since he was told to make it more intimidating, and then sarcastically tells the group to not press any buttons that they see around. Indeed, there is a red button on a nearby tree - pressing it will explode Kris, instantly killing them. After the trio solves the puzzle, Papyrus congratulates them again, and then hints at the next puzzle before moving on.

In the next room, Papyrus starts explaining the colored tile puzzle, listing off every rule and what each tile does. Because the explanation is so long, the trio loses track and Susie asks Papyrus to explain the rules again, but before he can do so, Sans tells him to stop wasting time. Papyrus agrees and then reveals that the puzzle will be entirely random, much to Kris and Noelle's shock. However, when Papyrus randomizes the puzzle, it is just a straight path to the goal, causing Susie and Noelle to laugh at the sheer odds of such an easy maze being generated. However, Papyrus refuses to accept this and randomizes the puzzle again to an actual maze. He then lets Kris begin. After they succeed, he mentions how he couldn't add a 30 second timer to the puzzle, since they had to compromise with more damaging tiles. Sans tells Papyrus to stop playing games with the trio, but Papyrus refuses to give up since he still has one more trap to go. He then leaves, though Sans hesitates, just staring at the trio. Papyrus has to re-enter the room to get Sans to come with him.

Papyrus is seen a little while later at the long wooden bridge before Snowdin Town. Once again he is with Sans (GG!Underfell), talking with Q.C. who angrily tells him that he knows what will happen if he destroys the bridge. Papyrus tries to reason with Q.C., but she shouts back at him. After seeing the Delta Warriors, she requests that the trio deals with Papyrus and Sans because she needs her supplies. Susie accepts, and Papyrus prepares the Gauntlet of Deadly Terror. Seeing how little the chances of survival are, Noelle tries to reason with Papyrus, saying that the gauntlet isn't fair and is something that Sans would do. Sans tries to convince Papyrus that the gauntlet is perfect, but Papyrus agrees with Noelle and tries to deactivate the puzzle. However, Sans has stolen the controls and tells Papyrus that he knew that he'd back down, tells him that the world is kill or be killed and then kicks him off the cliff so that he can grab Kris's SOUL. Papyrus is able to grab the edge of the cliff, allowing him to survive.

If Sans (GG!Underfell) is spared with Sleep Mist, Papyrus appears for the last time. Seeing that Susie is ready to kill Sans, Papyrus stops her, and, after explaining how he lived, walks up to Sans and says how he was kind before he arrived at Snowdin where he turned insane and started his killing spree, as well as physically harming Papyrus by bashing his head in for refusing to finish off Suzy. After wondering if Sans even cares about him anymore, he removes his chestplate and takes his cape, turning it into a scarf. He apologizes to the group (especially Kris) for everything, saying that he was blinded by his arrogance and doubt. Noelle apologizes as well, but Papyrus assures her that it isn't her burden to carry. Papyrus announces that he will turn over a new leaf, even if this means he will no longer become a royal guardsman, since even if the title seems cool, it is written in blood. Papyrus says that he will help people in need, since there are many people in the Underground that need that kind of help. He hopes that the others will accept his change. Noelle assures him that he'll do well; Papyrus thanks her. He then tells the trio to take care, and then leaves.

He also appears for one last time if Sans (GG!Underfell) is spared normally. After Sans explains his motives for being so violent and how Papyrus didn't see his point of view on everything, Papyrus asks Sans if everything he said was true. Sans says that he wasn't supposed to hear that and he doesn't need to know, but Papyrus disagrees because Sans was just becoming a part of the problem and that he nearly ended the life of a child. Sans believes he doesn't deserve a second chance or even to live. Papyrus agrees that he and Sans may not be forgiven after everything they did, but they still need to try being better. Sans hesitates, but with Papyrus's assistance, he gets up and agrees to go with him. Sans mentions the Royal Guard, but Papyrus has decided to not try and join the Royal Guard anymore because it is a title written in blood. Papyrus then apologises to the trio, especially Kris, for everything they have gone through. Susie is bitter, but Noelle wishes the two well. The two skeletons then prepare to move on, with Sans calling Papyrus 'boss' once again. Papyrus says he'll let it slide this time, and they both leave afterwards.

If Sans (GG!Underfell) is killed in any way, Papyrus doesn't appear for the rest of the section. It is unknown what he does after this.

Obliteration Route

Papyrus's appearances are nearly identical to the ones in the Normal Route, however in the electric maze room, he doesn't let Susie or Noelle pass until Kris solves the puzzle. Additionally, in moments where Susie and Noelle usually laugh at Papyrus, they don't. Papyrus also won't appear after the Gauntlet of Deadly Terror, even if Sans (GG!Underfell) is spared with Sleep Mist.

Trivia

  • If Sans (GG!Underfell) is spared, Papyrus will appear on the SAVE screen.
  • In the electric maze puzzle after being told by Sans to take off his boots, Papyrus mentions "ANOTHER REDESIGN", which is a reference to how Sans and Papyrus have received many redesigns in Underfell.
  • Papryus mentioning that the colored tile maze would have a 30 second time limit was an actual planned mechanic for the original GG!Underfell, but VyletBunni didn't think that this would be fair for Deltatraveler players to have this time limit since many casual Undertale players do not know the rules of the colored tile maze. There was even a scrapped track for this 30 second time limit.
    • While there is no time limit in the final release, Papyrus's dialogue after completing the puzzle changes depending on how long Kris took to complete it.
      • If Kris takes longer than 30 seconds, Papyrus judges them for being slow, telling them they should have listened to his instructions.
      • If Kris takes less than 30 seconds, Papyrus states Kris wouldn't have had an issue with the timer even if he was able to implement it.
      • If Kris takes less than 10 seconds, Papyrus notes that Kris was able to complete the maze very quickly, and wonders if they had planned their moves in advance.
